The USB power supply died and seems to have stuffed the device. I can no longer connect to it.

I have searched the community site and it seems I need to reset the key but when I follow the instructions the dfu utility complains it can’t find the device. The particle app finds it but it seems I have to ‘claim’ it first which doesn’t work.

How do I get my device working?

The LED pattern you describe in the title is not the same as for encryption key issue.
Are you able to switch your Garadget into listening mode (press and hold M until slow dark blue blinks) or DFU mode (click R while holding M until slow yellow blinks)?
